Disclosure: I received this box in exchange for my review, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
My son, the recently turned 12 year old, wants to be an electrical engineer when he grows up. He’s kinda smart like that and he has one of those brains. I’ve looked into different courses and camps for him to learn skills like coding. Everything has always been ridiculously expensive or just didn’t work with times and dates. I’ve ordered him boxes in the past that required him to build science related things, but they weren’t quite what either of us had in mind.
Then I got an email from Creation Crate. Like anything else, I looked up their site to see what it was all about and promptly got really excited. This was what I had been looking for. The box is aimed at kids 12 and up, but is just as good for adults.
The boxes are kind of on a curriculum. Each box is designed to teach you how to build and program electronics and each box is harder than the previous. If you complete the entire 24 months, you’ll be fluent in all the technology know how.
They sent us the first box, which builds a mood lamp. It came with all the hardware to put together, instructions to code it, and then how to make it all work. The site says “In this month you will learn how to write your very own computer program in the Arduino language and how to connect electronic components together using a breadboard and some wires. You will learn about basic programming concepts – such as comments and variables – as well as how the Uno r3 microcontroller uses this code to set the brightness of the LED lights. Once you’ve mastered this, the sky’s the limit!”
I set my son to work on it. He put it all together and then I put him on the computer to start the coding. He made a bunch of errors coding, but the program tells you what they are and where they are. The instructions were step by step and fairly easy to follow. We had questions though and thankfully, the have support were very patient and very helpful with all our questions.
Once it’s all good, the lights come on! I was super proud of both of us when they came on. There are also exercises in the instructions to teach you how to change certain things after the fact, like changing the brightness of the lamp and how dark it needs to be for the lights to come on.
This is exactly the kind of skills I think my son needs to learn to do what he wants in life. I highly recommend and plan on ordering more boxes to keep him learning and working. I’m not just saying that because they sent me this box for free. The way our world is going, skills like this are almost necessary. It wouldn’t hurt me to learn this stuff either.
