Summer is in full swing at our house! As much as I look forward to summer every year, I also hate it. Considering I work from home, I hate that it’s that much harder to work with the kids home all day and I feel guilty that I can’t hang out with them. I really hate it though because I have to share my son for the summer. In past years when we didn’t live near his dad, I would lose him for the entire summer. Now, his dad literally lives down the road, so we split the time. Things come up though that he can’t join us because he is at his dads. I do my best to plan things around the time he is with us, but it doesn’t always work.
As time as gone by and he’s gotten older, the summer separations have gotten easier. Sure, I miss him and wish he was home all the time, but such is life. When he was little, we used to have weekly Skype dates to talk and keep in touch. Now, it’s easier to just text or call each other. He has his own phone, pretty much only for this reason. When he is home, he can call or text his dad without having to ask to use my phone. Then when he is at his dad’s, I can easily text him and vice versa.
Being the age he is, I want to have total control over his phone. He is a very trustworthy almost 12 year old, but he is still a kid and I want total control. I also don’t want to have to pay a crazy amount for a phone or his plan. That’s why I love his LG Grace phone through Walmart Family Mobile powered by T-Mobile. It’s super easy. Pick your phone, your plan, activate it, and go. There is no activation fees, no contract, and the phone was pretty inexpensive in my opinion. The plan he is currently on is the $49.88 PLUS Plan – Unlimited Talk, Text & Data Plan which includes up to 15 GB of 4G LTE† data, then 2G*. What more could he need?
So, when he is with us during the summer, I do my best to plan fun things. We are big on road trips in this house. There aren’t any long road trips planned this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do weekend trips. In Texas, that means we never leave the state, but we aren’t lacking for things to do and places to go. I really try to restrict the amount of screen time the kids get, but even I know hours in the car calls for a screen of some kind. Even if it’s for my own sanity, I’ll let them watch or play something. I have introduced them to audio books and podcasts though. They aren’t big fans of audio books, but they have found podcasts the like. With my son’s phone, he is able to keep track of his own podcasts and not mess with mine. Nothing is more irritating than when he listens to them on my phone, before I’ve listened to them, and they are then no longer showing as unplayed. They are also big fans of YouTube and the odd videos kids like to watch, like people playing Minecraft. I don’t get it, but they can watch it together and keep quiet in the backseat.
The phone plan he has, the $49.88 PLUS Plan, also comes with a free VUDU◊ movie rental credit valued at $7.00. You get the free rental each time you renew your service and works on any VUDU◊ compatible device. That’s once a month for a lot of people. He also loves maps. He enjoys getting on Google Maps and looking at stuff. Actually both my kids do. Is that weird? I don’t care if it is, because there are way worse things they could be doing online. He likes to be our navigator. Him having his own phone allows him to do that on trips as well.
He thinks it’s his phone, and it is, but in a lot of ways it’s a family phone. Since there is no contract, I can cut it off without any penalty for whatever reason, whether it’s because someone is in trouble or we can’t fund it. I’m seriously thinking this is the way to go for teens and kids.
