Summer is finally here! This time of year always means lots of time in the car. It seems like we are always driving somewhere, be it the river, a festival, or to visit some random place. Sometimes we don’t even have a destination. It seems like no matter where we live, I tend to throw the kids in the car and see where we end up. They’ve learned my ways and are mostly used to it. I still get complaints, but they almost always enjoy where ever it is that we end up at.
It used to be so easy to just jump in the car and go, but then kids came along. Thankfully, we are past the days of having to pack up half the house, but kids are still kids. No matter the age, they still make messes, get bored, and generally just accumulate dirt. There are the normal messes, like faces covered in ice cream, but then there are also the messes that we as parents seem to invite. There are times when we’ve ended up going for hikes or playing in water when we weren’t prepared. How often are you out and come across a fountain or a splash pad that the kids just can’t resist? They always end up soaked. At least that water can help clean off the ice cream, but then they are soaked and have to get back in the car.
All the times this stuff has happened, has caused me to keep certain items in the car during the warm months. It’s saved all of us at one time or another.
Beach Towels – These have many uses. They can be used for the obvious, to dry wet children, but they also work well as blankets.
Sunscreen – This is pretty self explanatory. How many times have I left the house not realizing that I’d be in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.
Bug Spray – We tend to go on hikes and hang out at the river. It’s not always needed, but it sure is nice to have on hand.
First Aid Kit – I have kids. Kids do dumb stuff and get hurt. Alcohol wipes and bandaids are always good to have.
Plastic Bags – The Walmart kind. Works for wet clothes or to carry all the treasures the find and insist on keeping.
Entertainment – I try to limit screens in the car, unless the road trip is more than a couple hours. We have travel bingo cards and we also play random car games.
Kleenex – The Kleenex Go Anywhere pack is small, refillable, and convenient, but holds 30 tissues. It can be thrown in the glove box or hung up in the car. I like that it can hang from the headrest and be within easy reach of my messy child.
