I know many people make it a tradition to see The Nutcracker every Christmas. I saw it as a child, but I honestly don’t remember anything about it. I haven’t had the chance to go as an adult, but I’m taking my daughter to the ARTS San Antonio’s presentation this weekend!
The Mejia Ballet International’s production of The Nutcracker will be at the Lila Cockrell Theatre December 16-18. Students from the San Antonio Metropolitan Classical Ballet will dance the children’s role. There are four performances and tickets start at $29. Keep reading because I’ve got a way to save even more on tickets!
Set to Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky’s beloved score, The Nutcracker is, by far, the most widely attended ballet in America. The first American production of the ballet was staged in 1944 by the San Francisco Ballet. Ten years later, the late choreographer George Balanchine introduced his famous production of The Nutcracker at the New York City Ballet, a staging largely responsible for the ballet becoming part of the Christmas tradition in the United States.
This production of The Nutcracker is choreographed and directed by the founder of Mejia Ballet International, Paul Mejia, a well-recognized name in ballet. Mejia is a former principal dancer under George Balanchine at New York City Ballet. He danced principal roles in many Balanchine ballets. Mejia’s production of The Nutcracker continues the holiday tradition of this popular ballet.
