It’s almost summer! I’m so excited. Summer means barbecues, swimming, and lots of time spent outside. That’s what summer was about when I was growing up and I’ve got some great memories associated with it. I do my best to do make the most of the weather and make memories with my kids too. No matter where we live, we always spend plenty of time in the water, whether it’s in a pool, the ocean, or a river. Growing up, we did the same. We took swimming lessons every year, went to the river, and had tons of fun playing in the sprinklers. As I got older, I spent loads of time in my friend’s pool and then at another river. Then we started floating on yet another river. I guess most people call it tubing, but we call it floating where I’m from.
Another thing I always associate with summer is music. Music is always involved at any outdoor event and depending on the location, when we’re swimming as well. That’s part of why I was so excited when I found the new Coca-Cola™ bottles with the song lyrics on them. What goes together better in summer than a great song and a cold Coca-Cola? I picked these bottles up at CVS, which is awesome because it’s right by our house and great for a quick trip to pick up ice, more hot dog buns, or a couple cold sodas. CVS also has a great summer deal – buy 2 20oz bottles of Coca-Cola products, for $3. Seriously though, the lyrics were the best part. I looked at every bottle to see what all the lyrics were. Then when I was checking out, there was another cooler full by the register and I was trying to read them all while I was checking out.
One bottle I found has the lyrics This Is How We Do It. Do you remember that song? It came out when I was in eighth grade, right before the summer. I associate it with our end of school trips and then the summer after. One of those trips was for about 60 kids from three different churches, on a retreat at Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky, celebrating our confirmation. I made so many new friends that weekend, many who I’m still in touch with (if you count Facebook as being in touch). That summer was spent with my old friends and my new friends, with ample time spent in my friend’s pool. She was the only person I knew with a pool, so her house was the place to be.
Then I found the lyrics We Are The Champions, which everyone knows, and Follow Your Arrow. My kids love We Are The Champions. I have the record and it’s the first one they always request. It’s also on my iPod, so it’s something they’ll want to listen to when we are in the car or outside. I also have Follow Your Arrow and my daughter I and listen to it on occasion. It’s fun that the bottles have a mix of new and old, which brings up memories new and old. Also, if you download the Shazam app (or if you already have it like I do), which is available to download on pretty much all phones, you can get your Coca-Cola Share A Song.
This summer, we already have plans to spend a great deal of time at the pool and the river. This is the first house we’ve lived in that has a neighborhood pool. It’s literally right down the street. My kids would live there if we’d let them. Because we literally just pick up and go, I’ve got a pool bag packed and ready at all times. I don’t want to get down there, realize we forgot something, then have to walk back to the house to get it. No interrupting our fun time!
My pool bag contains:
Towels – at least two at all times. Since we can walk, it’s not a huge deal if someone walks home without one.
Sunscreen – This is obvious, but how many times have you forgotten it? I know I have! I keep a spray and a lotion in the bag.
Sunglasses – I can’t do anything outside without my sunglasses. It’s also important to protect your eyes from UV rays.
Music – If we’re alone, we always play music. If other people are at the pool, we normally don’t unless we’re on opposite ends and we keep it down.
Coca-Cola – There’s nothing better than a cold soda on a hot day!
Snacks – Swimming always makes me hungry and my kids even more so.
Book – I love sitting poolside and reading a juicy novel.
First Aid Kit – My kids always end up with cuts and scrapes, so it’s easier to keep this on hand.
When we go to the river, all of that is included, but we take a change of clothes and all our inner tubes too.
What are some of your best summer memories or how do you plan on making them this year?
