The weekend before last, we attended a boot camp for the kids of veterans. I’m not really sure of the organization that put it on, but the husband knew one of the guys who helped organize it, through a Weekend Warrior event he attended. The kids love stuff like this. The last one they attended was in 2011 though. It was put on by the husband’s unit and was much more military oriented, while this one was more about the kids having fun.
The day started off overcast and it did rain some, but that didn’t stop anyone. They had so much set up to do! We started with the National Anthem and a prayer, then the kids ran off to complete the obstacle course. After that, they were free to do what they wanted. The event was at a park, so they had the playground, as well as a climbing wall, fishing, kayaking, a mechanical bull, a craft, a grenade range (using water balloons), and a make shift Angry Birds game. The kids all ran around for hours and just had a blast.
The kids were all given a t-shirt and received a dogtag medal when they finished the obstacle course. They were also given 10 raffle tickets. Some super generous people had donated a ton of great prizes. There were 5 or 6 bikes, scooters, tons of toys, gift cards, and tickets to an Astros/Mariners game next year. The kids both put their tickets toward what they wanted. The little one couldn’t decide on all of hers, so she gave them to me. I divided them up between gift cards and baseball tickets.
Lunch was served and they started drawing the winning raffle tickets. More than a couple families won multiple items. One family won 2 bikes. They were almost to the end and the kids hadn’t won anything. It’s not like they need anything, but it’s always fun to win something. But then, they won the baseball tickets! They are for box seats at a game next spring. It’s really more fun that they won something we can all use together. All in all it was a good day. They had a great turn out and plan to do it again next year.
