I started working from home last week. I can’t begin to tell you how happy I am about it. When I interviewed for the job, they brought up the working from home thing. It was just an extra added bonus for me. After I started, I hadn’t said anything else about it because I wanted to be sure I was good and ready to be out of the office. The majority of my co-workers work from home, the road, or wherever they happen to be, so it’s not odd for me to not be there. The best part about it though? It saves me time, money, and kinda feels like I have a super long weekend. I wasn’t sure how easy it would be for me to stay focused and not get distracted, but it hasn’t been too bad. Here’s why I love it, besides the obvious, of course.
I only get up a little later in the morning, because I don’t have to make myself look too presentable (it takes no time to put on yoga pants and throw your hair in a ponytail), and the kids still have to get to school. Little Man’s school is a half mile away, so I get a nice, little walk in first thing. I then take the little one to school, getting back home about 8:30. That gets me started working a half hour early, since when I drive, I get there at 9. I take short breaks here and there, only short enough to throw a load of laundry in. At 1:30, I walk back to Little Man’s school to pick him up. I then get to help him with his homework. Between 4 and 4:30, I’ll go pick up the little one. If I still have stuff to finish when I get back, I will. If not, I pack up for the day, because family time is family time.
I save 2+ hours of drive time each day I work from home.
I’m guessing I’ll save about 2 tanks of gas per month, roughly $120.
I save on daycare cost, another $120 which should increase more when school starts in the fall.
I get a little extra exercise in. I eat better at home.
I have time to cook dinner, which also gives me leftovers for the week.
I get to spend a little extra time with my kids.
My tips for working from home?
Set a schedule and stick to it.
Don’t turn the TV on and get sucked in.
Avoid internet distractions. I use my work computer at home, so it limits me compared to my home computer.
