I try my best to find fun things we can do together as a family. I can drag the kids to whatever, but it’s sometime hard to convince my husband we should do things. Well, I found the perfect thing this past weekend.
Yes! Bullfighting for our family fun day!
I was told it was 3,000 yen a person to get in, but it was free once we got there. The fights take place in a large, covered, open-air dome. It was the perfect day to go. It wasn’t hot and there was a nice breeze blowing through. We were running behind, so we got there in the middle of a fight.
Basically, two bulls fight at a time. Each bull has a team of handlers, but only one handler is allowed to physically handle the bull at a time. The handlers get in their face and yell encouraging words, maybe? The bulls go head to head. It was mostly them just pushing each other around. No gore, no guts. The fight was over when one of the bulls just got tired and gave up. The winner was draped with a blanket/cloth and pink and blue cloths were tired around it’s horns. A few times, people, children too, got on the back of the bull after the win. I’m assuming they were family of the bull owners or handlers.
I’ve never been to a real bullfight. Not saying this wasn’t real, but you know what I mean. I would never have taken the kids if it could have been violent in any way. The kids got into though. Each fight, we chose who we thought would win and the kids cheered for their bull. The guy next to me was a little more intent on the winners and losers. Maybe they bet on them.
We were there about an hour and a half. We left well before it was over, but it was still an enjoyable day. I’m constantly amazed at the wide variety of stuff we find to do on this little island!
