The island of Okinawa is in the Ryukyu Island chain. There are hundreds of islands in the chain, with the main island of Okinawa being the largest. The island is around 450 square miles, not that big, so that tells you how small some of the other islands are.
This summer, I’m going to try to drive to all the islands that are connected by bridge. I made it to five of them on Sunday.
The islands are located on the east side of the island, facing the Pacific Ocean. We came around the southern tip of the island and visited the small unnamed island first (it’s under the bridge on the map). I had never been in the immediate area. There were people fishing everywhere! The bridge was short and once we were on the island, the road was only paved for about a half mile before it turned into a one lane gravel road. Google Maps does show some buildings on the island, but not much.
We headed to Henza Island next. I thought it was one bigger island, but it is actually three islands, pushed up next to each other. I don’t know if it was just because it was a gorgeous day, but this was the prettiest part of the island yet. The water was the perfect shade of turquoise blue, the hills were in the distance…it was just breathtaking. The bridge to the island had numerous cars parked on the shoulder, so I stopped too. There were concrete steps going down to the water. We put our feet in for a few minutes.
Henza, Miyagi, and Ikei Islands were in a row and just on one continuous drive. I’d be driving along, looking at the ocean, turn a corner, and be driving through fields of crops (I have no idea what the crop was). At times the road was very narrow, but the traffic was never lacking. I came across a beach that looked quite fun. The road dead-ended on Ikei Island at the Big Time Resort.
The bridge to Henza Island
The last island, Hamahiga, was a short trip to the south of Henza. We basically drove over the bridge and turned around. What I think it neat (after studying Google Maps), is that there is are schools on all these little islands.
There are more islands north of here. I’m going to try my best to get to those too.
